Providing Access to Textbooks Through Course Reserves

The Archbishop Alter Library provides course reserve services to any professor who wishes to take advantage of the service. Faculty can place copies of required and recommended textbooks on reserve, as well as any other course materials they want to make available to students.

If the library doesn't own a copy of a required textbook, the professor can request that the library purchase one. In classes with large enrollment, professors can request that the library purchase multiple copies.

This is a great way to provide at least some limited access to textbooks for students who can't afford to purchase them.

Instructions for placing items on reserve are in the box below.

How Faculty can Place Items on Reserve for Courses

What Can be Placed on Reserve

  • Books, videos, CDs, and other materials can be placed on regular reserve. Items can be library-owned or personal.
  • Items from other libraries cannot be placed on reserve.

How to Submit Materials
To place materials on reserve:

  • Fill out the online Course Reserve Request Form providing information about the course taught and the items to be placed on reserve. The online version of the form is available here: Reserve Request Form.
  • A Word document version of the form is also available. Either print out a copy and complete it by hand or download a copy and using Microsoft Word, type the information directly into the document. Send the completed form to julie.flanders@msj.edu

Where to Submit Materials
If you have personal items you want placed on reserve, bring them to the Library Circulation Desk anytime during library hours.

When to Submit Materials
Reserves requests are processed in the order they are received. Submitting items in advance will help us to make them available for your students in a timely manner.

Location of Reserve Collection
Print reserves are located in the MSJ Library. They can be searched in FOCUS (the library’s online catalog) by instructor’s name or by course number.

If you have questions about the course reserve process, please contact Julie Flanders at julie.flanders@msj.edu .
