Find Nursing Articles

Journal articles can provide current information, various points of view on your topic, and information that is not covered in books.  Search article databases like the ones recommended below when you need to find journal, magazine, or newspaper articles written about nursing and related topics. Nursing databases are at Databases Listed by Subject.

  • CINAHL Complete (Nursing & Allied Health) (EBSCO)
    CINAHL stands for Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature. It provides full text for over 750 English-language journals, as well as more than 240 books; also provides indexing for over 4,175 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. Updated weekly.
  • MEDLINE with Full Text (EBSCO)
    Contains the full text for more than 1,370 of the most used journals in the MEDLINE index, dating back to 1965. Indexes journals related to medicine, nursing, dentistry, the health care system, and the pre-clinical sciences; updated weekly.
  • ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source
    Provides abstracting and indexing for more than 525 titles, with over 470 titles in full-text. Indexes journals covering nursing, allied health, alternative and complementary medicine from 1986 to the present.
  • OvidSp
    Online portal offering streamlined access to premium nursing and allied health full-text resources.
  • Alt HealthWatch
    Indexes nearly 170 journals covering complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. Includes the full text of articles as well as reports, proceedings, association and consumer newsletters, pamphlets, booklets, original research and book excerpts; updated daily.

Find Nursing Books

When looking for nursing books, videos or DVDs on any topic, try these methods:

TIPS:

When searching library catalogs, you might begin with a subject search.
Examples of subject search terms:

Nursing -- history
Surgical nursing
Newborn infants -- care
Health promotion
Nightingale, Florence
Nurse administrators

If you are not sure of what subject to search, try using a keyword search.  Keyword searching lets you search for words in the title, publisher, and subject heading fields.  There are many ways to search library catalogs, so if you need assistance, don’t hesitate to ask a Librarian.

    Find Nursing Biographical Information

    When looking for biographical information on any nursing figure, try these three methods:

    • Use article databases like the ones in the Find Nursing Articles section listed above.
    • Search for books and videos in the FOCUS catalog (http://focus.msj.edu) and OhioLINK catalog (http://olc1.ohiolink.edu/search/) by subject using the person’s name or the subject Nurses -- United States -- Biography.
    • Consult the biography books in the Library’s Reference area.  A sampling of biographical resources you’ll find in the Library Reference area includes:
