Searching FOCUS

The  Archbishop Alter Library has books, videos, compact discs and many other kinds of information sources. Items owned by the Library are listed in FOCUS, the Library's online catalog.

There are several different ways to search for an item using FOCUS. You may search by author, title, subject, or for a word or words in the title or subject.

Search results can be limited by material type, such as BOOK, AUDIOVISUALS (videos), etc., or by location within the Library, year of publication, etc.

Follow the on-screen instructions for searching FOCUS.

Items not listed in FOCUS may be found by searching OhioLINK Central Library Catalog or other library catalogs.

From the Archbishop Alter Library's  home page, Find Books & Media lists options for you to search FOCUS, the Library's Catalog, as well as the OhioLINK Central Library Catalog.

    Searching OhioLINK

The OhioLINK Central Catalog maintains location and availability information for items held in college and university libraries throughout Ohio.

If FOCUS does not list an item, you may search the OhioLINK Central Catalog to see what other libraries own this item.

Follow the on-screen instructions for searching OhioLINK.

You may request that an item be sent to you at the Mount Library.  When searching OhioLINK's catalog, look for and click on REQUEST THIS ITEM and follow the on-screen instructions. You will receive an on-screen message that the request has been processed, or if your request cannot be processed. More information is available at How to Use OhioLINK Online Borrowing .

Items that are not available in the Library or through OhioLINK, may be requested by completing an Interlibrary Loan Request Form.

From the Archbishop Alter Library home page, Find Books & Media takes you to Search OhioLINK Central Catalog.

How to Request Items from OhioLINK

Using OhioLINK, currently enrolled Mount St. Joseph University students, faculty and staff can find and borrow items held in college and university libraries throughout the state of Ohio. With the Pickup Anywhere option, borrowers may have items sent to their home library or to any other OhioLINK institution for pick up. OhioLINK borrowing can only be used to request items not available in the Archbishop Alter Library.

    Please note:

Items requested from OhioLINK generally arrive within 3 to 5 business days. You will be notified when the item is received.

Items are held for pick up at the Circulation Desk for 7 days only. If not picked up within this 7-day period, they will be sent back to the owning libraries. If you need extra time for your items to be held, please, notify the library at 513-244-4216.

How to request items from OhioLINK
If your search of FOCUS finds no matches, click on the "Search OhioLINK" button.

Search OhioLINK if title is not found in FOCUS.

    request item from ohiolink

Then select "Mount St. Joseph University" from the drop-down menu and click the Submit button.

You will be asked to enter your name and library identification/barcode number.  This information is printed on your MSJ AllCard, which is both your student photo id and your library barcode.  (To obtain your AllCard, stop by Campus Security on the ground floor of the Seton Center.)

How to use the Pickup Anywhere option
The default Pickup Institution and Location is the Mount St. Joseph University Circulation Desk. If you want to pick up the item at an OhioLINK library convenient to your home or work, use the drop-down menu to select another Pickup Institution and Location. To complete your request, click on SUBMIT.

To check the status of your OhioLINK requests: Login to View Your Library Record or call the Circulation Desk at 513-244-4216

    Searching Local Libraries' Catalogs

You may want to use more than one library in your research. Because different libraries serve different groups of people, the kinds of resources and the topics covered will vary from one library to another. An art library may include slides and prints; a medical library will subscribe to specialized journals for physicians and health care workers.

Since no library can afford to own every resource, some of the items you need may be located at the public library or at a large university library.

Follow the on-screen instructions for searching other library catalogs.

From the  Archbishop Alter Library's home page, Find Books & Media lists Search Local Libraries' Catalogs.  Here you'll find a list of area college, university and public libraries.  From here you can search library catalogs or connect to library Web sites.

Searching the Catalog of the PLCHC

Items owned by the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County are listed in the library's catalog.

You can access the catalog at the Public Library's home page, www.cincinnatilibrary.org, or go to catalog.cincinnatilibrary.org.

Instructions for searching the catalog are at catalog.cincinnatilibrary.org/iBistro_helps/English/search.html.

You may request that an item be sent from the Main Library to any branch or from one branch to another. Use the Public Library's catalog to locate items that are not available through FOCUS or OhioLINK's Catalog. To request that an item listed in the Public Library's catalog be sent to the Archbishop Alter Library, complete an Interlibrary Loan Request Form.

From the Archbishop Alter Library's home page, Find Books & Media leads you to Search Local Libraries' Catalogs. Here you'll find a list of area libraries. From there you can connect to the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County.

    Searching WorldCat (Libraries Worldwide)

WorldCat lists items owned by libraries in over 70 countries. Items include books, videos, periodicals and web resources.

There are many different ways to search for an item in  WorldCat. You may search by keyword, author, subject, title, publisher, conference name, etc.  Your search may be limited by year, language and material type -- books, visual materials, sound recordings, etc.

Follow the on-screen instructions for searching WorldCat.

Once you find an item, WorldCat will tell you what libraries own that item.

To request an item that is listed in WorldCat (but not FOCUS or OhioLINK's Catalog), complete an Interlibrary Loan Request Form.

From the Archbishop Alter Library's home page, Find Articles lists Databases listed A-Z.  From here you can connect to WorldCat.
