The Archbishop Alter Library's permanent art collection includes:
- Growth of Spirit by Therese Fisher Clements,
- 3 Salvador Dali lithographs,
- Contemporary Pieta by Jim Bono,
- Vincenzo Gemito's bronze statue The Young Fisher Boy donated by Paul & Mary Margaret Naas,
- Annual Library Art Prize Student Collection.
Growth of Spirit
is a multi-segmented screen-printed fabric design,
measuring 8' high by 22' wide.
The piece was commissioned for the Library's refurbishment in 1988.
Jim Bono’s Contemporary Pieta
became part of our collection May 2005. While the pieta is a traditional form, Jim writes in his artist statement that the piece is contemporary in that it "communicates universal sorrow for the loss of life in Iraq." The featureless face of the mother is a powerful evocation of the "unbearable anguish" of any parent who has lost a child. Good art should provoke a response from thoughtful viewers. Since libraries are an ideal place to learn new ideas and challenge one’s previous assumptions, we welcome Jim’s work as another mental stimulus.
